Math Intervention Services

Students are identified for additional math support through a variety of assessment data and performance indicators. Math interventions incorporate research-based programs and instructional approaches designed to help students develop procedural fluency, number sense, and conceptual understanding of middle school mathematics concepts aligned with the Common Core State Standards.

Below is a brief description of some of the programs and supports provided through our math intervention program.

W.I.N. Math

W.I.N. (What I Need) Math is a Tier 2 intervention that meets daily in a small-group setting during the exploratory period. The course is taught by a math intervention teacher who is a certified math educator. W.I.N. Math is a trimester-long course designed to strengthen students’ number sense, procedural fluency, and conceptual understanding of essential math standards. Instruction focuses on developing the foundational skills students need to be successful in their core math classes. The curriculum is designed to align with and support grade-level math instruction while providing students with additional targeted instruction and practice.

W.I.N. Math is a support class rather than a graded course; students do not receive grades or homework. Student growth is monitored through ongoing data collection and progress monitoring.

Enrollment in W.I.N. Math is based on one or more of the following indicators:

• NWEA MAP Math achievement that is historically below the 40th percentile
• Current grade-level performance
• Teacher or team input

Tier 3 Math Support

Tier 3 Math Support is the most intensive level of math intervention provided at our school. This support meets daily during Supervised Study and is taught by a math intervention teacher who is a certified math educator. Tier 3 intervention is designed to help students identify and address gaps in prerequisite mathematical skills from previous grade levels. Instruction is highly targeted and individualized based on each student’s specific needs.

Resources may include i-Ready, IXL, and teacher-created instructional materials, along with other research-based resources and strategies. Student progress is regularly monitored to ensure that instruction is responsive to individual needs and supports continued growth toward grade-level expectations.

Enrollment in Tier 3 Math Support is based on one or more of the following indicators:

• NWEA MAP Math achievement that is historically below the 20th percentile
• Current grade-level performance
• Participation in lower-level interventions that have not provided sufficient progress
• Teacher or team input
